Menu Plan Monday April 27, 2015 and Some Savoury Wild Blueberry Dishes

This entry is part 15 of 112 in the series Monday-Menu Plan

Savory Dishes with Wild Blueberries

Anybody who knows me knows I love blueberries. Maybe from the 4 blueberry bushes growing in my back yard or the big Costco size bag of blueberries in my freezer. Or the main ingredient of my morning smoothies.

Either way it’s one of my favorite fruits. Ones right off the vine taste great of course. But if you can’t get fresh frozen will do.

Moms Meet recently asked me to review some Wild Blueberries and come up with some recipes based on them and swapped two of my week day dishes last week with Wild Blueberry inspired fare.

Grocery Bags with Food

I was sent a gift card to purchase my ingredients. And a cute little bottle to make some berry infusion water.

Even though I passed the bag often enough in the grocery store I had no idea there was a difference between “Wild” and…well you know, the other blueberries. So just to be clear. I’m working with Wild Bluberries here.

About Wild Blueberries

  • Wild Blueberries are wildly difference from the regular blueberries you normally find in the produce section. Don’t be fooled by their size – they pack more into their tiny blue bodies than any other blueberry on the planet!
  • Wild Blueberries have a more intense flavor than regular blueberries. Wild Blueberry plants are more genetically divers with thousands of interlocking plants spreading and interlocking naturally across fields. That diversity is what gives Wild Blueberries their complex and delicious flavor – an extraordinary mix of tart and sweet.
  • Wild Blueberries have two times the antioxidant capacity of the larger cultivated blueberries. A growing body of research shows the potential health benefits of Wild Blueberries including gut health, diabetes, cancers, and brain health.
  • 99% of the Wild Blueberry crop is frozen fresh at harvest, which locks in their nutrition and taste.
  • Wild Blueberries are called “Wild” because they are not planted- they have occurred naturally in barrens and fields in Maine and Eastern Canada for many years.

I opted to veer from my usual baked goods or blueberry smoothie and came up with a rather simple Wild Blueberry and Ground Chicken Pizza to try. I sort of made it up as I went a long and I was pleasantly surprised with how yummy it came out.

Wild Blueberries are smaller and a little tangier than regular or cultivated blueberries. A small 15 oz bag at my grocer was over $5. If you can find them there are actually 3 pound bags which retail about $10.

I think for health reasons I would like to buy these every once in a while. Since we all (3 of us) drink daily smoothies a bag of these would be gone in a day or two.
