Creating an entirely new bedroom can be accomplished in as little as nine simple steps. The result will be a luxurious bedroom that is one of the most cherished rooms in the home. The work can even be done yourself in a few afternoons.
To create a fresh new look, follow the simple steps below:
1. De-Clutter The first step in the process of creating a fresh new room is to de-clutter. Many of us are pack rats and have many items that are not necessary in the room. Remember, you are going for an entirely new look so getting everything out of the room that you no longer need or has no purpose is a must to achieve our goal. Sort through your items and pack them away or give them to charity.
2. Paint the Walls A fresh coat of paint to the walls is a must. Color choice is very important here as the wrong color can completely ruin the décor of a room. Here are a few things to consider regarding color selection.
Small Spaces
For rooms that are small choosing a light color will give the room the appearance of a larger room. This is also a great trick for rooms that do not receive much natural light.
High Ceilings
To decrease the height of the ceilings paint the ceiling a darker color. This also will give the room a more cozy feeling. Be careful though - this trick can backfire if the wrong selection of paint is used resulting in a suffocating effect.
Narrow Rooms
To give a narrow room a wider appearance paint the end wall a dark shade and use lighter colors on the side walls. The dark color will advance as you enter the room, making it appear shorter and wider.
3. Comforter or Bedspread The bed should be the center of the bedroom. Therefore, it is important to make it as spectacular as possible. By simply changing the bedspread or comforter you can completely change the look of the room. There are many selections in bedding including solids, prints and floral and animal, but the main objective is to get colors and designs that are a part of your personality, making the room something that you will enjoy for the long-term. For example, for those wanting a safari look, zebra print bedding would be perfect. Take some time to visit the various stores in your area and choose one that you are comfortable with.
4. Windows Windows are often overlooked and are very valuable for the setting of the room. Here, however, you must take into consideration the size of your room. For rooms with shorter ceilings, long drapes will elongate the walls giving your room a feel of more space. Before selecting your drapes consider the color of the walls in the room. It is important to choose drapes that compliment the walls. Alternatively, consider using valances. Valances can add to a room giving it a comfortable feeling. However, with valances, you must remember that you need to include blinds or drapes.
5. Flooring Floors should make a statement. Whether you have hardwood floors or carpets, one easy way to spruce them up is with an area rug. Choosing the right area rug will add to the room, giving it a warm feeling. If you have a small room, choose a rug that is light in color as darker colors will restrict the room making it appear even smaller.
6. Headboard The headboard makes a big statement in your bedroom. If you have an existing headboard, consider refurbishing it by painting it, refinishing it, or upholstering it. If your budget allows it, you may consider purchasing a new headboard. If you have no headboard and are on a tight budget then consider creating the illusion of a headboard through the clever use of paint and/or wall paper to put the shape of a headboard on the wall behind the bed.
7. Decorate Accessories are a must to bring the entire room together. Here you want to focus around the bed. Add pieces to the room that compliment the colors in the bedding. For the bed, add additional pillows and pillow shams that match the bedding. Consider the items in your room and the style of room you have. Do you have a dresser? Here a beautiful lamp or a runner can add value to the room’s appearance. For your bedside tables consider items that will attract the eye and compliment the room. With a bit of decorating you can achieve a look and feel that combines everything together.
8. Light Fixtures The lighting in the room should be given a lot of consideration. For example, near the bed you will want lights that you can dim. Additional light such as lamps should also be considered for times that you need brighter lighting in the room. There are plenty of selections on the market in light fixtures so be sure to choose fixtures that will accentuate the room.
9. Handles and Knobs This is a simple trick and one that will completely liven up the room. By changing your existing handles and knobs, you can set a completely new tone in your bedroom.
