Mastering Your Master Bedroom: Designing the Perfect Sanctuary Print

bedroom furniture I don't know about you but when I get home from a long day at work, I look forward to unwinding with a cup of tea and a good book. There's nothing nicer than curling up in my papasan and turning on some music, taking in the scenery out my bedroom window. Unfortunately, if you have a hectic life like I do, finding time for yourself if easier said than done. Therefore, creating a relaxing sanctuary for yourself in your home is very important. Given how much time people spend sleeping, it makes perfect sense to transform your master bedroom into your ultimate retreat. Here a few suggestions on how to create a calming environment for you to relax and have a great night sleep.

  • The Layout and Furniture: It's definitely a good idea to start with a plan. Sketch out a really simple layout plan for how you want your ideal master bedroom to look. It might be helpful for you to take the measurements of your room first, just in case you have to purchase any new bedroom furniture. Let's think about the basics - you're going to need a sleeping space, a space to relax and some sort of changing area (in case you aren't lucky enough to have a walk-in closet). The bed is typically the focal point of any bedroom so it's a good idea to position that as the first thing you see when you walk into the bedroom. No matter how much or how little closet space you have, maximizing what space you do have is crucial in the bedroom. A platform bed with under-bed storage drawers is a great option! The drawers themselves are discreet and can be hidden by the comforter, duvet or a dust ruffle. Not only do you have an attractive centerpiece in your room, but you have ample storage space for clothes or extra blankets. As far as the rest of your bedroom furniture, you should position it around your room in a way that makes sense in terms of your routine. You'll probably want some sort of night stand or end table next to the bed, as well as a bureau, wardrobe and maybe a vanity. Create a little relaxation corner for yourself complete with a comfy arm chair and ottoman. If you want to have this chair facing the TV, that makes sense. You don't want your master bedroom to be too cluttered so make sure things are spaced apart enough so that you aren't tripping over furniture to get into bed. Less is definitely more!

  • Wall and Floor Decor: Now that you have mastered the layout for your master bedroom, it's time to shift focus to the walls and floor. If all of your walls are white, it might be a good idea to give yourself a feature wall (the first wall you see when walking into the room). By painting your feature wall a different color, you make the room look bigger and you give it a pop of color. You want it to be relaxing so don't choose a color that's too dark or too bright. Perhaps a nice subtle green, blue or beige would be best. It's OK to leave the rest of the walls white! Wall art is great for the bedroom. A nice print, water color painting or even a mirror. Your wall art should complement your feature wall and your bedding. When it comes to your floors, throwing down a nice and soft area rug is a great idea! Warm and cuddly under your feet, you'll be excited to kick off your shoes! The floors and walls are great places to add a little bit more color and personality to your master bedroom.

  • The Lighting: Finally, it's time to think about lighting. If you don't have overhead lights, you might want to install some sort of a light fixture overhead. A proper light fixture will fill the room more evenly with light and be better for your eyes. If this isn't a possibility for you, a few lamps are fine. Play with levels by getting a couple of different floor lamps varying in height. This will create a cool look in your room. A table lamp or a reading lamp would also be good, preferably with a dimming feature so that you can control the intensity of the light. Investing in compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) instead of incandescents is also a good idea. The quality of light you get from a CFL is just so much cooler and cleaner. Natural light also is a great thing for your bedroom, but you don't want to be blinded by the sun rising in the morning so invest in some venetian blinds, roman blinds or some drapes.
