Cooking more of your family meals has many benefits. Let discuss them...
Save money: It’s a known fact that a home cooked meal is significantly cheaper than eating out at a restaurant. Put that extra money in your pocket and recreate restaurant meals at home.
Weigh Less: When a restaurant serves you food many times the plates you are served are far more than you could consume in a serving. Making your own meals will allow you to practice a bit of portion control.
Be in control: Of what goes in your body. With food allergies and sensitivities at an all time high doesn’t it just make sense to make the food you and your family eats from scratch?
As You Like It: Sometimes a dish in your favorite restaurant would be better if only... Well now you can add that if only in your own kitchen. Make the adjustments to make your dish just as you like it. True this may be a bit of experimentation but that’s the fun part.
Make Memories: Some of people’s fondest memories are of homemade meals cooked for them. Enough said. Get cooking!
Now! What if this is all new for you? You aren’t exactly Julia Child in the kitchen. You’re used to box mixes and just adding water. Where can you learn cooking tips and recipes?
My Recommended Resources
America’s Test Kitchen .These people research and study the best way to make a recipe. The videos are invaluable because they are also giving you cooking tips along the way. The tools to use, how to cut onions, the best way to mince garlic etc. There is a charge for a year’s access to the videos online (I paid. Great investment.) but you should be able to check out the videos from your local library or through interlibrary loan.
Julia Child.Yes she was a master chef but she could relay a recipe to you in an easy non-threatening way. Why cook mediocre when you can cook like a chef? The Way To Cook DVD
Saving Dinner Basics: How to Cook Even If You Don't Know How. I have Leanne's first cookbook, Saving Dinner and have subscribed to her menu plan service in the past. It's my go to resource when I know I have a busy week ahead and don't want to make up my own meal plan. The recipes are delicious and healthy and if you struggle to put full course healthy dinners on the table I highly recommend any of her cookbooks.
On a personal note. At the age of 27 I discovered, in a horrible way, severe allergies to soy. This meant completely changing what and the way I ate. Of course making ALL my own foods from scratch was key. Breads, condiments, desserts. No more eating out. Over 10 years later but I’m healthier than I would have been otherwise. I’m not missing out on anything. My family saves tons of money by not eating out and we share a great family hobby of cooking together.
