Dollar Stretcher ideas on treating stains, storing Christmas items, organizing toys and more.
Don't Waste the Heat

I put firebricks in my oven placed in old bread tins. Wile cooking in the oven, they heat up. When I am done cooking, after I turn off oven, I can leave the door open and let the heat out. Obviously, you'll want to keep any children or pets out of the area to prevent burns.

Stain Treatment

If we get a grease spot on our clothes from something we spilled while eating, I simply apply baby powder or cornstarch to the grease spot, and let it sit over night. I launder it the next day and the grease is gone. The powder or cornstarch absorbs the grease spot and takes it out.

Storing Christmas Items

Where I work, many of the departments receive popcorn tins as gifts. I started asking for them when I found that they just tossed them out. After thoroughly cleaning them, I started storing Christmas items in them. This works much better than the paper boxes from copier paper. Also, it protects them from water and dampness. Great recycling idea!

The Punch Bowl

When freezing liquid to be used as ice for a punch bowl, don't limit yourself to water. Any type of juice or lemonade will make great "ice" without diluting the flavor of your punch. Also, try including fruit frozen into the "ice" for the punch. Any type of fruit or even a can of fruit cocktail will make the punch more festive. My favorite shape for the "ice" is one like a doughnut. I use a Jell-O mold for this.

Waxing Strips

I have found that using strips of the cheap paper coffee filters works great for waxing my legs. They will work for regular wax or sugar-based wax, and they're cheap and disposable. They may be not as "green" as re-using the muslin, but I don't have to wash them either.

Not Just for Christmas

I hit the after-Christmas sales to stock up not only on wrapping paper for the holiday next year but also supplies that can be used throughout the year. White tissue paper is cheap after Christmas and can be used for wrapping birthday presents throughout the year. I also buy plain wrapping paper (blue, red, purple and silver) for the same purpose.

Little Bit of Leftovers

We used to put leftovers on top of bagel halves to get them eaten quickly. Now, with the price of bagels having soared, we use tortillas instead. A dollop of any old leftover, a smattering of grated cheese, and a small shake of garlic salt (or hot sauce) between two tortillas, heated in a skillet or in our thrift store George Foreman grill makes quick work of re-heating leftovers. They disappear almost immediately. They reheat pretty well too in a skillet or a toaster oven.

Organizing Toys

Kids' toys seem to have so many little pieces and parts that need to be kept together. I've seen nice storage containers at various stores and even some at dollar stores. However, I have found that the plastic zippered bags that are used as packaging for bed-in-the-bag sets, duvets, sheet sets, and even bathrobes and pajamas work really well. And not just for toy storage! These bags can be used for storing many things, such as craft and sewing supplies, cookie cutters, greeting cards, bows and ribbons, etc. They are very versatile. Just be careful because some bags have small holes, which are there for consumers to feel the fabric of the item that was packaged within. Also, you'll want to make sure that you don't leave them where your children could get into them and suffocate.

About Gift Cards

Regarding gift cards, review your state laws. For example, in Oregon, it is illegal for a gift card to have an expiration date or to charge monthly fees at any point. No matter where the card originates, if it is given to a resident of Oregon, it is covered by Oregon state laws. Each person should check with their state regarding this issue. I have educated several malls owned by out-of-state firms regarding the gift card rules since their brochures indicated that they charge monthly fees after 12 months.

Eliminating Thermos Odors

Most people know that bringing your coffee to work in a thermos is a great way to save money. I have a high quality metal Thermos with a plastic cap. However, I never liked to bring coffee from home because the Thermos cap would invariably get a funky smell to it even though I washed it thoroughly every day.

I discovered that the best way to eliminate this odor is to sterilize the cap with boiling water. My office has a water cooler that dispenses boiling water from one of the spouts, so all I need to do is fill the cap with the hot water on a daily basis. This takes about two seconds and it works like a charm. Since I'm a coffee fanatic, I easily save $4 per day ($80 per month) by bringing my coffee in, and it is better for the environment because I don't discard all of those paper coffee cups.
