When the cooler weather sets in it’s a great time to take care of a few homemaking tasks that you might otherwise not think about. You think “Fall? A time for housecleaning!!??”  Yes! You’ve spent the summer letting in the outdoors and now it’s time to clear them out. Enough dust will build up over the winter so why not get a head start and remove the excess today (or tomorrow).

So let’s get started...

Master Bedroom: Now’s a great time to clear off those bedroom surfaces and clean things up in the bedrooms. Wash curtains and bed dust ruffles. Shampoo rugs if you are able. Dust behind and beneath furniture. You may be surprised at what is lurking in the corners. Cooler winter temperatures mean your windows will be closed more often so clearing the air of dust makes good sense.

Bedroom Closets: As you put those summer clothes away it’s a good time to review and refine your wardrobe. Some have mentioned tagging items you haven’t worn and then tagging them again the next time the season rolls around. This way if an item has been tagged twice you’ll know it should probably be removed from your wardrobe. Dust and clear out the closet floor. Dust off your clothing rod too. Oft times I have been known to see a good layer of dust sitting on the shoulders of some of my outfits that rarely get used.

Front Hall: Gardening dirt, or seashore sand may have found it’s way inside the front door.  Wipe down the front area and wash any indoor mats.  Clean up windows and spot clean walls. Vacuum the rug and sweep and mop the floor. Dust plants and their holders. Organize what is left. When the muddy wet boots and drippy coats start entering your home you’ll have a whole new set of issues so start off with a clean slate instead of piling the dirt one on top of the other.

Linen Closet: Hot summers mean plenty of baths. Your towels have been getting a workout. Tidy up this busy space. Retire worn out items. Refresh your vintage linens and place wonderful smelling bath soaps between linens and towels for a fresh scent.

Pantry: With colder weather cooking styles change. More soups and heartier meals. Clean out and organize your pantry for easier meal making. Is it time to refresh the spices? Check for outdated foods, items you will never use (the could go to a food bank),  and pests that may have invaded.

Now you don’t have to do this all this cleaning and organizing at once. Take your time over the period of a month or two and you’ll be wondering why Spring has to have all the fun.
