Organizing a child’s closet can be a little tough. These tiny ones have tiny clothes and the growth spurts means that there are a lot of them, in different sizes. And chances are you are not just dealing with their clothes but also a fair amount of toys.
There are many organizers for children’s closets so you will have to find and tailor the organizational system you choose to the age of your child. The goal is to have something your child can use and take care of and no matter the system be prepared to step in and help out.
Having your child put their toys and clothes away is part of helping them developetheir own sense of independence. And using a system that lets your child help you decide where everything belongs gives them a sense of ownership over their things. They will also want to help keep things neat and tidy.
Start with separating the items they wear today with the ones they will be wearing later as they grow or next season. Easy access boxes on the top shelf of the closet are te best places for these soon to be used clothes. Label the boxes and organize by size.
Hangers can be tricky for younger children, if they are at an age where they can get dressed on their own consider putting in shelves instead of a hanging rod. As far as the rest of the closet provide nice cubbies for clothes and shoes with hanging organizers. They can be had fairly cheap and have even been spotted in the dollar store or the dollar section or your favorite store (by yours truly).
Next up label your child’s closet. Labels are the best way to teach your children where to put what. This works even if your child cannot ready yet. Use a combination of pictures and words to label bins, drawers, and shelves inside the closet. This will make things easier for getting dressed and to begin teaching them to put away their own laundry.
Finally to get off to the right start after you put your child’s new closet organizing system in place help them each day to put things where they belong. As time passes, they will get used to the system and it may only require a weekly clean-up from you to make sure everything is staying neat and tidy.
