When you think about it, it makes sense; a disorganized life and home can make even the most laid back person feel depressed. If you look around and see only clutter and piles of “things” that have to put away, it is very easy to become overwhelmed and just let the piles continue to grow. Right about now you may be thinking to yourself that you might be a bit unorganized, but who is it hurting, really? On some levels you are right, simply having a lot of stuff laying around isn’t going to create a life or death situation. On the other hand, improving your organizational skills will not cause any harm either, in fact you might be surprised how much easier life becomes when there is a place for everything and everything has a place. Here we will cover how getting organized will save you money and help you regain control over certain areas of your life.
• Save money on groceries. How many times have you gone to the supermarket (without a list) and filled your cart with staples you thought you needed only to discover when you arrived home that you had one, two or more of those items in your pantry? This isn’t particularly damaging if you use the products before they expire, however many people end up throwing away food that they simply forgot they had because the expiration date has past. In this scenario, being disorganized creates a situation where you are literally throwing money away.
• Avoid fees for late payments or overdrafts. If you don’t have an well organized system in place to track and pay bills you are setting yourself up for fees which could have otherwise been avoided. Considering the fact that credit card companies and banks make billions of dollars each year on various penalty fees, you can see how this money quickly adds up. Advances in technology and easy access to the Internet has made it possible for even the most disorganized person to quickly set up automatic bill pay or online banking accounts that help track and pay bills on time each month. Of course you will have to make sure you have money in the bank to cover these expenses which requires careful attention to your checking/savings account.
• Staying home saves money. Yes, it may be hard to accept but there are some people who are so frustrated with the clutter and disorganization in their home that they actually avoid spending time there. Of course this is an extreme case, however it does happen. If you find yourself going out to eat because it is easier than organizing your kitchen or seeking other forms of entertainment because you can’t enjoy your home, you are wasting money that could be spend somewhere more productive.
• Save money by being prepared. If you constantly wait until the last minute to make purchases you knew about in advance you are missing opportunities to save money. Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and holidays are all times when we know we will be buying gifts however many of us wait until the last minute to do our shopping. By being organized and planning in advance you can comparison shop, save money and avoid making a last minute “emergency” purchase which will undoubtedly cost more money.
• Avoid replacing things you can’t find. This is a rather simple concept but one that is often a culprit to busting a household budget. When you live in a cluttered and disorganized state you may be unable to locate things you need, forcing you to replace them. For example, I have been guilty of losing my digital camera…..in my house. Fortunately I found it after much searching but not before I considered buying a new one when I needed it for an event.
As you can see, it pays to be organized. In today’s economy everyone is looking for ways to save money and if you can increase your savings by simply becoming more organized, it is a win-win for everyone involved.
