Why I Take Multivitamins

Important: This post is not to meant to offer any medical advice.  Please check with your physician on the supplements you choose to take.

It was over 20 years ago when I started taking vitamin supplements regularly.

Back then my grandmother, a longtime vitamin supplement taker, prescribed a regimen for me designed to clear up my suffering skin from a new allergy breakout.

I had a severe reaction to soy in my 20’s. I had never before reacted to soy but overnight my body decided “no more.” I looked just like Will Smith in the movie Hitch (no joke) only mine didn’t resolve with a dose of Benadryl overnight.

So I fled to my grandmother’s. She was a catalog vitamin shopper. I come by my vitamin cupboard naturally. She had a big one. Stuffed with all manner of vitamins. (by the way she’s in her 90’s and still orders tons of vitamins). She handed me Vitamins E, A, B, and C. I took them religiously for two weeks I was so desperate.  At the end of that two weeks, my skin was like a newborn baby’s. And bonus, my hair had a growth spurt! I was hooked!

I purchased a copy of Prescription for Nutritional Healing and researched the Optimal Health regimen. I wrote up something for myself and had a plan.

I did talk this all over with my doctor. She thought it was great. I was very healthy and she encouraged me to keep it up with a few tips for not overdoing it.

After a while I dumped the individual supplements for a good multivitamin.

For many years now my go to brand for Multi-Vitamins has been Source of Life Liquid. The past couple of year’s I’ve taken Source of Life Gold and Source of Life Gold Shake. Both soy-free.

Initially, I started taking the Source of Life brand because it was the one mult-vitamin I could find that was soy free but still packed a punch.

Sometimes I will change up to Mega-Foods brand vitamins. I love that I can take them on an empty stomach but the pills do not give me as good results as theSource of Life Gold Liquid.

Neither of these formulas contains iron and so I supplement by eating liver (which I love) or taking Grass Fed Liver pills.

As the years went by I would lapse between taking a multivitamin and feeling great to not taking one, eating horribly and feeling exhausted. It’s a rollercoaster I maintain to this day.

You may be asking yourself why, if these multivitamins work such wonders for me, do I continue to fall off the band wagon now and again?

  • Laziness.
  • Price.
  • Too Busy
  • Laziness
  • Forget how good I feel.
  • Forget how much energy I can have.
  • Laziness.

Really I have no excuse. And so I write posts like this to remind me to keep it up.

Why I take Multi-Vitamins

I take them for optimal health. Without multivitamins I’m okay. I’m still healthy. With them I’m fabulous.

  • I have more energy
  • My hair grows faster, looks healthier
  • I have more energy
  • More Stamina

I’ve read that people who take multivitamins are generally those who are already living a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise. I like to say that’s me.  I find that is true that when I’m working out regularly and eating a more whole foods diet that multivitamins just find their way next to my breakfast plate (or smoothie).

My Family and MultiVitamins

As we were leaving the hospital with our little preemie the nurses handed us a bottle of baby vitamins (liquid of course). My daughter has been taking a multivitamin since that day (well probably before because she was in the nicu for 2 months).

I started my husband on vitamins when we got married. He takes them for a while and then has his down times. I guess I’m a bad example there. He’s also noticed increased energy and better focus while taking a multivitamin. He tends to be motivated to take them whenever the seasons change.

The Caution…

Most people aren’t aware of the RDA for any particular vitamin and when combined with diet, it’s quite possible for a person to get more than they need. Vitamin poisoning and over consumption can cause serious health problems. Check with your doctor.

While vitamins aren’t the answer for everything I personally believe they can help when it comes to health.

Know What You Need in Vitamins and Minerals

Become familiar with the RDAs for your age, gender, and lifestyle needs. For example, if you’re a female then you may need more calcium. If you’re an athlete then you may need more protein and so on. Familiarize yourself with your body’s nutritional requirements.
