What Made America Great. A Documentary {review}
I enjoy watching documentaries and I got the chance to review a really good one, one I’m proud to have in my Christian library, this past month.
We’ve been watching Anthem for a Nation by New Liberty Videos as a family.
The video opens with breathtaking scenery (that makes you want to take a trip) showing the many mountains, rivers, valleys, forests, cities, tourist attractions and more across American with the backdrop of … I think the song is This is my Country.
The narrator with the familiar voice talks about the greatness of America and it’s beginnings. (More breathtaking scenery).
We are treated so some history that we may have learned in our grade school years and long forgotten but now here we also learn some special tidbits. About the reasoning behind some of the choices, buildings, and laws.
The narrator with the familiar voice talks of the immigrants and their arrival to America. He speaks of how many Christian truths and principles are woven into the fabric of the government. The same government that is removing, or has removed God from the schools.
Then we hear what most of us already know. About the removal of anything hinting towards Christianity in schools. We hear about the “new America” where God and Christ are being systematically removed from schools and some of the more shocking things we are seeing happen in schools today.
The Christian documentary has one particularly poignant moment did not fail to make it’s point.
Anthem for a Nation particularly touches a cord for me (and many of us reviewing this video) when it asks us to close our eyes and listen to the sounds of coins representing the numbers of lives lost in various wars and also in abortions. The abortion clang rang so long and so loud that it brings one to tears. And the image of the absolutely precious baby was almost too much for me.
You can view a 15 minute sample of Anthem for a Nation video below:
Even with it’s hard hitting truths Anthem for a Nation is laid out in a way that would be appealing to the whole family and so it’s a good fit for all ages. Even a young child can enjoy this video and appreciate how America was put together and how much thought went in to many of the things we take for granted.
For many Christians the information in this video is nothing new. It may be preached in your churches each Sunday or discussed over dinner with your family members once a week. We know it. We’ve felt it. This video helps to drive it home.
What this video is asking Christians to do is to pray. Pray for your country and pray for God’s protection.
We loved this video. This is a very patriotic video. There is plenty of scripture interwoven into the video. The fact that we were able to sit down as a family and enjoy it together is a big plus in my book. It is visually appealing and very memorable and touching. It’s something I could actually listen to without watching also.
You can purchase the Anthem for a Nation DVD, which arrives in a black DVD case, for $19.95
A Plus
Thought that was all? Not so! There are also two extra bonuses on Anthem for a Nation!
Two women who were actually former Nazi’s and then became Christians tell of their own history and why they thought America was/is so great.
One of the bonus videos is of Marie Anne Hirschmann also known as Hansi. We actually used to have her story in comic form in our family library. We may still so I’ll have to dig and see because our daughter would enjoy and learn from it. I’m not sure if she’s still living as she was 82 in 2009 but she has a powerful tale and it’s nice to hear it in her own voice.
Kitty Werthmann, an Austrian woman, is new to me and I would like to find her story to read. She tells of the horrors of living under Hitler’s regime in Austria.
One thing both of these women stressed was the importance of freedom in America. Kitty specifically points out how her freedoms were systematically removed in Austria. It’s a wake up call.
If you have a Christian library in your home or in your church this would be great to add to it’s collection. I know this video won’t be in my home long as my mom is itching to get her hands on it. It is a treat.
