We’re talking with Jen Steed from Happy Little Homemaker today at Homeschoolers at Home on Tuesdays. Jen is on the Schoolhouse Review Crew with me and I thought it would be wonderful to get a peek into her homeschool day.

Kemi: Tell us a little bit about your children’s ages and grades?

Jen: I have 3 — ages 6-¾, 4, and 1-1/2

Kemi: What homeschooling method do you use?

Jen: Classical and Charlotte Mason inspired.

Kemi: Can you give us a peek into your typical homeschool day?

Jen: Crazy :).   Right now, I have my (almost) 7 year old doing second grade in most subjects.   Monday is kind of a right off — she helps in the baby childcare room while I attend a mom’s group and the afternoon is spent for her and her sister doing co-op.   First thing, she does her computer school right around breakfast — for us right now, that is math and catechism (we do Faith & Life online).  She also does any independent workbook stuff and we will pick that back up with geography and science in January. I am usually puttering in the kitchen, cleaning up after breakfast and/or nursing and reading to the littles while she is doing her independent work. Then she plays with her brother and sister until lunch.

At lunch, we talk about the vocabulary word of the day.  I putter and take care of more things until we hit the post-lunch lull when I’m ready for a break.   Then I sit on the couch and nurse some more and read history, science, do a lesson in First Language Lessons, Shakespeare or whatever is on our plate for the day.

Because I also work two days a week (I have a sitter come in to watch the kids), sometimes she does her computer school in the office while I’m working and the reading happens later in the day.  We do more fun and independent things on days I work.  Sometimes (especially if it’s a subject she likes), she will ask to read more history or science in the evenings, especially if dad is home late.  I have just switched to the more living book centered school and it is working MUCH better for us!

Kemi: We love to see where homeschooling happens. Can you give us a peek into your homeschool room?

Jen: I can give you a picture of my living room and dining room :).    We don’t have a dedicated room anymore.  We never used it :).  My social butterfly likes to be where everyone else is!

Kemi: So you know that Homemaking Organized is all about homemaking or the details of home. We love to find out how others keep their homes. Can you tell us about your own homekeeping and how you manage to fit it in with homeschool?

Jen: It’s really hard, honestly.   I am working on getting rid of a lot of excess because if the kids don’t want to pick it up and *I* don’t want to pick it up, we don’t need to have it.  I’ve been using the Clean Mama’s Homekeeping Society to help with deep cleaning and to track my regular  homemaking for me.   I am not one of those people who likes to clean and frankly, I’d rather have an organized home than a CLEAN one.  I’m great at management and organization and procurement and project management but cleaning is, well, boring!

Kemi: Do you have any crafts or hobbies that you would like to share?

Jen: Writing is actually my hobby.  I have several books in progress and umpteen more ideas :).  I write for magazines and such, too. I blog about 20 hours a week and I also work 6-8 hours a week at our business doing marketing and social media.

Jen is a Catholic wife and mother to three little ones whose nose can usually be found buried in a book, learning once all the work is done.  Or sometimes, even when it’s not!  You can always find Jen blogging about the big 5 — God & Catholicism, taking care of yourself, serving your spouse and children and all the other work women typically do at home.   She can be found blogging at Happy Little Homemaker and on most of the social media sites including Google+.
