Math Essentials
Okay the title is tongue in cheek. And I’m obviously kidding about the homework part.  What is what is really going on is that I’ve been moving along at a pretty good clip in my abilities to help my daughter with her math in our homeschool. But as with all good things, that period eventually came to an end this past school year. So I was excited to brush up on my Math skills with Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials.

About Math Refresher for Adults

The people at Math Essentials know that keeping up with maths skills is important no matter the age so they created Math Refresher for Adults.

This paper bound print book is 270 pages and contains quick to the point lessons on grade school to high school math subjects listed below.

  • Whole Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percents
  • Geometry
  • Integers
  • Charts and Graphs
  • Word Problems
  • Pre-Algebra and Algebra

Math Refresher for Adults is a resource y0u can dive into no matter what level math you need to brush up on.  Each lesson covers one page  in the following format…

  • Begins with a few review exercises. This is stuff you should already know so you ‘re just making sure here.
  • Following that are Helpful Hints about the current lesson.
  • Then you work through a few topic problems.
  • And finally  the lesson ends with one word problem to solve because we know those are just the worst!

At the end of each topic section there is a review of the whole topic. There are also Practice Problems, and Final Review sections for Word Problems and Algebra.

The back of the resource contains solutions for each problem, a glossary for math vocabulary, and several charts and tables such as a Multiplication Table,  and Square and Square Roots.

There are detailed directions to explain how to work through the book and access to online videos to reinforce the lessons.

It is also stated that you can use these lessons with your child in case they are struggling with a topic.

How I Used Math Refresher for Adults

The past few years I have thought that a math refresher would be a great idea. Obviously I never looked too deeply because I had no idea this existed!

And I’m not the only one who thinks this is a great idea.  When I first got my copy of the Math Refresher for Adults both my husband and my mother spotted the book on my desk, picked it up, and expressed a desire to use it when I was done! You see adults need math refreshing too.

Last year my daughter started in algebra and this would have been so helpful back then. Even so it’s not too late. My daughter is still doing Algebra and believing her mom remembers all this like the back of her hand so algebra is the topic I started with.

The instructions say to work no more than an hour at a time and to copy the problems (neatly) on to paper so that is what I did.

I didn’t use the online video lessons because I like to torture myself but I did take a look at them.

The instructions in the book are a little hard to understand as to how to access the videos but I managed to figure it out. There is also access information for strictly algebra lessons.

I can see so many ways this resource is useful. Not only in getting up to snuff so you can help your child with their schoolwork but also for those taking tests standardized tests, placement exams, tutors, and yes for sure homeschooling parents.

I think every parent, homeschool or not, needs  Math Refresher for Adults on the shelf.
