A Booklist for Tween Girls

|

The various accounts of what I liked to read as a child are both funny and a bit fascinating. At age five I carried around a small thick French novel. Pure words, nary the picture. The fact that I was a small child reading such a book was not the issue. The issue, to the elders around me, was that it was purely in French. A language, I think, unknown to me.

We were living in parts of Africa at the time and I would sit by the window and sound out the French words. I remember clearly that while I understood a few of the words, the jest of the story remained escaped me.  My mother was a French teacher at a local school at the time.

But I loved the book. I carried it everywhere. I still remember it today almost 40 years later (I’m dating myself here). And through the years my big sister would pass on to me what she thought was a good book while I would usually reject it in favor of my comics.

It was about at the age of 12 when my sister finally gave me her Janet Oke series that my mother had purchased that I finally found a niche of which I really loved. Historical Fiction and with a Christian bent no doubt. I devoured the whole Love Come’s Softly Series and then the Seasons of the Heart Series before I moved on to the Canadian West Series.

It was through the years that I found other Christian authors that I’ve come to love and look forward to reading. My daughter is now of that great pre-teen age and book a love somewhere between my sister and myself. She loves to read especially at night when she’s supposed to be going to bed.

Keeping her in books could have been a challenge but thanks to the Schoolhouse Review Crew and Fly Promotions we have discovered some great reads.

The books below are ones that my daughter has enjoyed and I’m sure a little girl you know will enjoy them too. At 11 she knows what she likes to read.  She enjoys fanciful stories where animals are the main characters and she’s also big on Pioneer Stories or “The Olden Days” as she calls them.

These books are clean fiction for young girls. You won’t necessarily find scripture in their pages or a come to Jesus moment but they have a Biblical Worldview. These are books I carry in my own daughter’s library.

Happy Reading!

Diary of a Real Payne

This cute series is about a 10 year old girl named EJ and happenings in her day to day life. I discovered this series when we reviewed the first book through the Schoolhouse Review Crew. My daughter loved it so much I’ll be giving her the next two as a birthday present. It’s humorous, cute, and perfect for a young girl. You may find that young boys like this series also.

Little House on the Prairie

I was blessed to find this series in a library book sale. So yeah I got a great deal on it. It’s a must to have in the library. I’ve included the final books in the series in case your daughter hasn’t read those yet.

Andrea Carter Series

There are plenty of books in the Andrea Carter series for younger girls and preteens and teens. These are set back in time a bit in the 1800’s. Andrea lives on a ranch with her family and loves horses. If you visit the Circle C Adventures website you can find Study Guides and Lap Books to go along with the Andrea books. Turn reading into a chance for learning!

Mattie Richardson’s Horses in History Series

This was a series we reviewed last year. It was written by a teen for young readers and has a unique spin of looking at history through the eyes of horses. You can read our review here.

    1. Thanks for dropping by Tracey. BJ’s reading lists have been great for us this year. My daughter has had fun reading their recommendations this year.

  2. Laura (great name by the way) I forgot about Anne! How could I forget Anne? Maybe because we’ve been so busy watching the movies I haven’t gotten around to introducing her to the books yet. But she did catch me reading one once. Thank you for the reminder.

  3. I didn’t discover Jane Austen until my adult years either and now she is one of my favorites!
