A Love Like Ours by Becky Wade Book Review
About the Book: A Love Like Ours (Bethany House, May 2015)Former Marine Jake Porter has far deeper scars than the one that marks his face. He struggles with symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.
When Lyndie James, Jake’s childhood best friend, lands back in Holley, Texas, Jake cautiously hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds. Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like she was as a child. Jake pairs her with Silver Leaf, a horse full of promise but lacking in results, hoping she can solve the mystery of the stallion’s reluctance to run.
Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake’s will, Lyndie’s sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he’s built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he’d thought he’d lost returns, but fears and regrets still plague him. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?
*While this is the third book in a series, it is written as a standalone.
My Review: I am so happy there are four books in this series. I enjoyed A Love Like Ours a lot. I did not put it down and sadly finished it in two days. Becky is a gifted writer. Having already met Jake in the previous books in the series we got to look more deeply into his troubled soul and watch as Lyndie attempts to pull him out. It’s a heart breaking and heartening ride. I love the back story that they were friends when kids. It makes sense that only someone very special could make him feel again. And the touching story of Lyndie’s sister, just tug at my heart strings why don’t you Becky!
The character Jake has no overnight solution to his PTSD and that makes it more realistic. Everyone around him keeps a wide berth but Lyndie, having known him since he was a child makes that extra effort. She loves him even as he pushes her away. She’s just what he needs.
Christian fiction readers will enjoy this return to the Porter brothers.
An interesting tidbit, see how the book cover for A Love Like Ours is made.
