Rescue Me! Captain Sun Adventures : Part Comic Part Devotional for Kids {Review}

The latest superhero movies are not my daughter’s thing (or so she says) but when she spotted Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith by The Captain Sun Adventures in our bedroom one evening (because I was planning on relaxing with it) she snatched it up and read it straight through to the end!

Part of the appeal may have been the super hero on the cover. Or the fact that this was something mommy was going to read. But if you’re curious Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith  is a comic /devotional written by Bryce Morgan, a pastor, and illustrated by Mitch Martin.

Rescue Me! is written as a fun way to remind kids that there is a real hero who can rescue you everyday.

Grocery Bags with Food

It’s a comic book about a fictional place called Capital City (I know, it sounds familiar). Capital City is being threatened by darkness (que music).  The citizens are scared and running in fear. Super hero Captain Sun, from unknown origins, comes to the rescue but can he save the city?

What follows is the typical super hero story with darkness getting a foothold and people in danger. Captain Sun comes to rescue and eventually gets some help too. I don’t want to give too much away but the end of the story has a cliff hanger letting you know there is more to come.

Interspersed with this is how you as a Christian can be a hero in every day life.

About Rescue Me!

Rescue Me! is written/drawn in comic book form (sorry I know I said that already). It’s six by nine inch full color pages (but also available in a kindle version).

The comic is broken down into eight chapters chapters so that might make it easier to use a devotional for your younger kids. Each chapter begins in a newspaper edition fashion. There’s a thought provoking encouragement about God and how He has prepared you to be a superhero along with scripture. And then at the bottom of the newsprint it feeds into the super hero’s story.

The last page includes 16 questions corresponding to each chapter.

Who is Captain Sun?

Honestly I don’t know! We don’t know where Captain Sun came from. His origin story. His beginnings. Just in case you were wondering. This question cropped up in my mind. Was he supposed to represent someone? Well Captain Sun is a typical super hero we are all familiar with from the movies, past television shows, and the comics.

But being a Christian and following the Lord is like being a super hero here on earth. The power to pray for people. The power of showing God’s grace and love. We have no masks or capes, or even visible powers but getting through life without Jesus is just impossible. That is the message in this comic.

Using Rescue Me

As I was reading Rescue Me! I kept thinking about our Vacation Bible School program this past summer. It was about Jesus rescuing us from life’s awful situations. From fear, from loneliness, even from sin. And I was thinking how this Captain Sun might be a good option for VBS. Low and behold on the last page there is information on a Captain Sun VBS materials! I haven’t checked it out yet but I will be.
