Finally Monday:

This weekend life derailed my plans. I had big kitcheny ones too! My daughter had picked up a bushel of apples (more about in a bit) and I was going to peel them, and cut them, and get them all in the freezer. I knew I didn't have the energy for a canning frenzy so I was going to peel and freeze. It's easy that way to use them later for smoothies, pies, and applesauce.

But alas we came down with a stomach bug and that derailed my plans.

Back to the apples. To help our growing child appreciate the value of a dollar, learn a little more about how math figures into the real world, and help out a bit more in the workings of the family my husband is doing something different. He's giving her a set dollar amount and she is now in charge of purchasing the family fruit! Or in charge of the family fruit diet (oy vey). I'll talk more about the details next week in my Helping Your Child Through Math Struggles mini-series, but she really impressed us with picking up a bushel of apples for $5. I assured her it was okay, and I could handle it but they are still sitting there in the kitchen waiting for me (another oy vey).

How much is a bushel anyway? 40 pounds?

So what to do when life derails your plans? Well blessedly in this instance apples last a while so I'm not in too big a hurry. But some other things had to be put on the shelf and some other things need to be done instead.

What do you do when life derails your plans?

What to Do When Mom Gets Sick?

  1. Call in for help. Since this bug was catching I didn't really want to call anyone else in for help. My husband was already home and he pitched in marvelously.
  2. Make Dinner easy. Hopefully your reinforcements can help with dinner but in case they can't it helps if you always try to have a dinner or two in the freezer.
  3. Let it go. Let your kids veg out in front of a video or two. Or play all day long. They will be okay and thankfully so will you.
  4. What if your kids are small? 10 Tips for Helping the Whole Family Survive

As you can see from my menu below we will be taking it easy in the kitchen. My dear husband wrapped up a turkey dinner for last night. We'll have some rice with it. Other than that we'll be playing it by ear. I'm going to be making some bone broth and I imagine there will be lots of gentle soups.

I'm so sorry that I have nothing more for you but that's how it goes this week.

To make it up to you here is the recipe for the Sourdough Waffles I was going to make (courtesy of King Arthur Flour).

My Weekly Menu Plan:

Monday: Baked Turkey dinner made by sweet husband

Tuesday: Play by ear

Wednesday: Play by ear

Thursday: Play by ear
