Make Your Own Carpet Deodorizer with Borax

Borax is often used to lighten and brighten your laundry but did you know it has several other uses?

I keep a box of 20 Mule Team Borax on my cleaning shelf for all sorts of reasons but my favorite is for cleaning the carpets.

My husband came home one day, after having our vacuum cleaner serviced, with a shaker bottle of some carpet deodorizer. He paid an exorbitant amount for the bottle and when it ran out I was adamant that we find a cheaper alternative.

Going off of what I know and what I have in the house I mixed up some really nice carpet deodorizer with Borax, baking soda, and lavender essential oil.

If you want measurements for your own Carpet Deodorizer mix up….

  • 1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1 cup of Baking Soda
  • 20-30 drops of Lavendar (I like it strong but you can always reduce the amount).
  • Mix it up and pour it into a recycled sprinkler bottle.
  • Sprinkle on the carpet and let sit a few minutes before vacuuming. Scents the whole home!

pssst! Do you need to clean the stains from your carpet?  Make a paste of water this  Borax/baking soda mix and rub it into the stain.  Let the paste dry then vacuum the paste.  You will be left with a clean and fresh smelling carpet!

You can also use Borax a number of ways in the home. Find several uses here.

  2. WOW! This is one way I have NOT used Borax. I have an allergy to Lavender, but I will use another fragrance as I usually do and give this a try. I have everything I need to do it this weekend. Great, great idea!

    1. Thank you Elizabeth I made it after ants started migrating in my front door. Now I just like the smell and the ease. It fragrances the whole house.
